88 Minutes Blu-ray Review

88 Minutes Blu-ray Review
Written by Loys JohnsonVideo
88 Minutes comes to Blu-ray with a 1080p AVC/MPEG-4 video presentation. Detail was quite good, but black levels were not as deep as I would have liked. The film is quite gritty, so I wasn't sure what to expect. Indoor scenes looked the worst, with a washed out look, but really wasn't too bad. Once outside, the transfer definitely looks better, with vibrant colors and a good amount of detail. 7/10.

Dolby TrueHD 5.1 audio is included, and it sounds decent. Dialogue was very good, and clear from start to finish. I felt the surround speakers were not put to enough good use, there were some great moments, but not many. The film's score also tended to feel more front-heavy than I expected, which was disappointing. It was not horrible at all, I just expected a bit more from the title. 7/10.

Commentary With Director Jon Avnet
Alternate Ending (10:10) (SD)
Director's Point Of View (7:46) (SD)
The Character Within (7:48) (SD)
Previews (HD)

The commentary was decent, but nothing special. I thought the alternate ending was a bit misleading, as it is more of an extended ending rather than a shocking twist or surprise. They were unfortunately all in standard definition other than the previews for other Sony releases. 4/10.

Blu-ray Exclusive

BD-Live is included on the disc, but does not contain anything exclusive to his specific Sony release. When the logo is clicked, it will take you to Sony Pictures BD-Live center in which you can download previews for current and upcoming releases, Blu-ray and theatrical.

Blu-news Summary
88 Minutes was a solid film, hated by many, but I found it quite decent. The ending was slightly predictable, but still found it quite enjoyable. It was not amazing, but a decent popcorn flick. The video presentation is decent, I didn't find it so bad to be honest. The audio was decent as well, but a bit disappointing, I definitely expected more. Extras were definitely lacking, but acceptable. Overall I would 'Give It A Rent.'
