Hellboy II: The Golden Army Blu-ray Review

Hellboy II: The Golden Army Blu-ray Review
Written by Loys Johnson
Hellboy II comes to Blu-ray with a 1080p AVC MPEG-4 video presentation. The presentation looks fantastic, and always leaps off the screen. Colors are dynamic and impressive, and black levels are always solid. Detail was very impressive as well, with every strand of hair to every little feature on the skin being clear as day. The transfer impressed me even more in the later half of the film, but it was terric from start to finish. 9.5/10.

The 7.1 DTS-HD Master Audio track is amazing, with everything sounding so lifelike and clear. Dialogue was always clear from start to finish, never feeling too quiet despite the action. The film's magnificent score made a terrific use of the surround speakers. I was very impressed by how everything sounded so realistic, it was actually quite creepy at times. The lossless track definitely provides a lot to the film, and just sucks you in to the film like never before. 10/10.

My favorite feature on the disc is the U-Control feature (Specifically Scene Explorer). Universal has included some features I never would have thought of, such as the Scene Explorer feature, which allows you to toggle between different versions of the scene. The versions include the final version, a version with out the creature effects finalized, and a version with out the creature effects at all. Everyone should try it out as soon as they get their hands on the Blu-ray version, as it's really an awesome and unique experience.

The second disc acts as both another disc of features, including a lengthy making-of feature, but as a digital copy as well. Hellboy II provides a ton of very interesting features, some not so entertaining to the casual viewers, but big fans of the film should really enjoy them. BD-Live is yet to go Live, but included is Movie Chat and more! We will update when it does go live. 9/10.

Blu-news Summary:
Hellboy II: The Golden Army is such a fun flick, it provides a ton of action and a great story as well. The humor in the film is also very welcome, and really made me enjoy the characters that much more. The special effects in the film are great, and everything just flows very well. The Blu-ray version is stunning, with amazing video and stunning audio. The extras are also very entertaining, and even included are unique Blu-ray exclusive features everyone should enjoy. Hellboy II is a 'Must Own' for the work Universal put into the Blu-ray version alone, not including how awesome the film is.
