Mamma Mia! Blu-ray Review

Mamma Mia! Blu-ray Review
Written by Loys Johnson
Video
Mamma Mia! comes to Blu-ray with a 1080p VC-1 video presentation on a BD-50. Typical of a Universal Studios release, the transfer is simply fantastic. The film actually exhibits some of the most impressive scenes I have seen on Blu-ray in terms of sharpness, detail, and clarity. There are a few scenes which were not as impressive in detail, but it seems to be more of an issue with the source than the actual transfer, and it was never too bad. The film is colorful, bright, and vibrant, and makes for an excellent Blu-ray presentation overall. 9/10.

Audio
Universal has included 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio track, and it sounds fantastic. Being a musical, I knew the audio presentation could not be anything less than good. The audio was actually more impressive than I had anticipated. The film makes a very good use of the surround speakers, leaving for a very immersive musical experience. Dialogue was nice and clear, and never felt dull or too quiet. Mamma Mia! packs a punch, and fans will be very pleased. 9/10.

I was quite surprised by the features included, they were actually very interesting. The behind-the-scenes being the most interesting, as to why certain people were cast, as well the actual recording of the music in-studio as well as during filming. Universal has included a pop-up trivia track, allowing you to view facts and other interesting details about each song as they are featured in the film.
Also included is a Picture-in-Picture track, which recycles extras from the featurettes, making for a very appropriate presentation. My Mamma Mia Commentary will allow you to record your own video commentary track to share with friends and family, as well as My Chat for those who like to discuss films with others while viewing the film.

Blu-news Summary
Mamma Mia! was a very nice surprise, and while it's not the perfect film, I found myself very entertained from start to finish. The film is just fun and filled with heart, and never has a dull moment. Amanda Seyfried starring as Sophie was something I was very anxious to see, previously seeing her star as the dumb girl Karen in the 2004 film 'Mean Girls'.
She was quite surprising, and who knew she could sing so well. Meryl Streep, Colin Firth, Pierce Brosnan and more also star in the film. Meryl Streep was very good, but that was to be expected. Pierce Brosnan was the weakest part of the film, having quite the bad voice, at least his acting was decent.
The Blu-ray release is top notch in EVERY category, impressive video, immersive audio, and a ton bunch of features for those who love the film. Mamma Mia! on Blu-ray is 'Highly Recommended.' and a 'Must Own' for fans of the film.
