Election Blu-ray Review

Election Blu-ray Review
Written by Loys Johnson
Disc Size: 27.2 GB
Film Size: 25.7 GB
Film Rated: R

Election comes to Blu-ray with a 1080p AVC/MPEG-4 video presentation on a BD-50 disc. The transfer was actually better than I had expected, and while not perfect, I was very pleased. Colors are great and very vibrant, while still keeping a natural look. Detail is also quite impressive for the most part, particularly any close-up shots. Black levels were always solid and deep, and grain was there but never took away from the high-def experience. There is a bit of dirt and scratches here and there, but nothing to fault the Blu-ray transfer for. 8/10.

A 5.1 Dolby TrueHD audio track is included, incorrectly mislabeled as 5.0 on both the case and menu. I had a feeling the audio would be less than amazing before viewing the film, and while not amazing it's still fits the film well. The film is extremely dialogue driven, with a light score that does make use of the surround speakers. Dialogue stays front and center, nice and clear. It's not going to impress, but it certainly doesn't sound bad. 7/10.

Audio Commentary By Director Alexander Payne

All the extras from the DVD are ported over to the Blu-ray, but not like it was much work, there is only an audio commentary from the director. I didn't make time to listen to the entire audio commentary, but what I did hear was quite interesting. He really has a lot of symbolism, and it's just neat to hear about why he did certain things in general. 3/10.

Blu-news Summary
Election is a very nice surprise. The Blu-ray release is my first viewing of the film, and I really loved it. It's not a masterpiece at all, but the cast is fantastic and surprisingly funny as well. Not everyone will love the film, but I think many will definitely enjoy it. The Blu-ray release is quite good, with impressive video, nice audio, and no missing extras from the previous DVD release. I would not hesitate to say 'Recommended.'
