A Charlie Brown Christmas comes to Blu-ray with a 1080p VC-1 video presentation that generally looks very good. Usually black lines were extremely solid, but there were moments where there were double outlines going on (although hard to notice when in motion).
The biggest issue overall is distracting dirt and specks popping up throughout the presentation. There are some very strong moments, and then there are fairly average moments as well. Colors are very good, vibrant but not totally overblown. This is a very good transfer overall, I just wish it was slightly cleaned up before coming to Blu-ray. 8.5/10.
5.1 Dolby Digital audio is included, and the track is extremely quiet. Volume will definitely need to be raised for this release when viewing. Now I know this short film would probably not benefit much from a lossless track, but it's still an issue for me. Everything just felt subdued and compressed, it's a shame there's no improvement to be found over the DVD. 5/10.
Bonus: It's Christmas Time Again, Charlie Brown (23:00) (HD)
Another Charlie Brown Christmas special is included, and definitely makes this package sweeter. This special is presented in high-def as well, and looks better than the main feature.
A Christmas Miracle: The Making of A Charlie Brown Christmas (15:59) (SD)
See how the Charlie Brown Christmas special came to be in this very nice and informative featurette.
Trailers (1:19) (SD)
A trailer for the 'Classic Christmas Favorites' collection, which is not available on Blu-ray, but definitely should have been.
DVD/Digital Copy of the film
The second disc includes the DVD version of the film., as well as a Digital Copy of the film. The Digital Copy is quite useless to most as it is Windows Media Compatible only.
Extras are weak, but they always have been. I definitely love the Warner Bros. included the other Christmas special on this release as well, and in high-def to boot. This definitely increases the value of the release by a very high percentage. The DVD inclusion is also nice for those with children, although the Digital Copy is useless in this case. 7/10.
It's a classic that I watch every year, and will continue to watch every year. It's almost impossible to not have seen this at least once in your lifetime. It's short but the content is classic for almost anyone, who doesn't love Charlie Brown? 10/10.
The Blu-ray release is good, featuring a good upgrade from DVD, and the same audio from the DVD. Extras are weak, but at least we get another Christmas special to help ease the slightly overpriced package...at least the slip cover is better than most releases. Ultimately this release is 'Worth A Look' whether it be a purchase or a rental.
