Stan Helsing comes to Blu-ray with a 1080p VC-1 video presentation. I was very surprised by the high-def clarity on this release, prior to viewing I expected a very mediocre presentation to be honest. The film looks sharp and clean like a new release should, featuring impressive detail and colors.
The film is certainly stronger the first half of the film, mostly due to better lighting. Towards the second half, we begin to see darker environments which make the presentation look a bit muddy at times, but I thought black levels were good overall. There is also a nice layer of film grain present, particularly in the darker scenes.
Colors are very impressive, they are very rich and added a good amount of pop to the picture. Overall I am very pleased by the high-def presentation, it looks much better than I had anticipated. 8/10.
5.1 uncompressed PCM audio mix is included, it's nice but lacking from the start. The film is extremely front heavy and really is underwhelming overall. Dialogue was clear, front and center. The film's music and effects were almost always contained within the front left and right speakers.
While I understand this is not a big budget film, the mix feels rushed and weak compared to your average new release audio track. Surround use opportunities were actually quite extensive, but rarely used. This is a solid effort, but I definitely expected better and it certainly could have been better. 7/10.
Killer Parody: The Making of Stan Helsing (11:07) (HD)
Cast and crew interviews are included, as well as a good amount of behind-the-scenes footage.
Extended, Alternate & Deleted Scenes (8:02) (SD)
Six scenes are included, mostly extended or alternate.
Outtakes (5:00) (SD)
real and fake outtakes, actually not very funny at all.
Trailer (2:35) (SD)
A terrible quality trailer for the film is included.
There are not too many extras, but I did enjoy the making of featurette, which is thankfully presented in high-definition. The other extras may appeal to big fans of the film, but the video quality is quite bad on the standard def extras, particularly the trailer. Overall it's a decent effort for a film like this. 4.5/10.
The film does not stand out among the many spoof flicks we have seen release the past few years, but it's far better than let's say Meet The Spartans and miles better than Epic Movie. I really felt the actors in the film added so much to it, perhaps saved the film from being a complete disaster. I respect the film as it's a decent effort of a funny stupid movie, slightly saved due to good casting. 4.5/10.
The Blu-ray release is surprisingly strong, at least video wise. Audio was decent, I definitely was left wanting a better mix, but at least they gave us a lossless mix. Extras are weak overall, but the making of is definitely entertaining. Overall I would not recommend this release as a purchase unless your a big fan. If you do have slight interest in this film though, I say 'Give It A Rent' just in time for Halloween.
